6 Reasons Autumn is the Best Season to Visit New York

One of the world’s most vibrant and thrilling cities, New York is a delight for visitors year round. Having said that, we’d like to make the case that autumn beats just about any other time of the year. Without further ado, here are our six top reasons you should visit New York in the fall.

EVERYTHING is More Affordable
From airfare to accommodation, the most expensive items on your vacation are just plain less expensive in the fall in New York. Because the crowds have dissipated, you can save, save, save on expensive hotels and flights. And you’ll want to have that extra money in your pocket because…

The Official Start of Broadway Season
September ushers in the new show season on Broadway. If you’re a theatre person this is prime time for taking in new and buzzed about plays. At the same time, shows that have been around for a while and popular musicals also benefit from the fewer tourists who drive ticket prices sky high in the summer months.

The Colors are Stunning
If you grew up watching films about New York, some of the most memorable have autumn as a backdrop. And there’s a great reason for this – Manhattan in the fall is a foliage extravaganza. The city is alive with the colors of the season – from Central Park to Greenwich Village, the brisk and bright days dazzle in an array of autumn leaves.

Perfect Weather
Anyone who’s been to New York during the summer, knows how the heat can wilt your dreams of a relaxing vacation. In the fall, you get the best of both worlds. The weather is still warm, but not oppressively so, and the winter chill is still around the corner. As a bonus, with mostly clear days and very little rain, the city views are unobstructed. Throw on a sweater, grab a cup of coffee, and take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building.

Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center
In a city with so many iconic views and activities, one of the classic Manhattan winter pastimes is a visit to Rockefeller Center and the ice rink. In the past, you had to wait until the lighting of the Christmas Tree to take advantage, but these days you can actually skate as early as October (this year the rink opened on October 12). One benefit in skating early? You save quite a bit of money. Skating in October will save you about $10 if you’re a grown up (kids are $15 all season long).

Festivals are Everywhere!
Food and drink festivals, music and family events pop up everywhere in the fall, so whether you’re a foodie, a beer drinker, a music lover or a young family looking for fun – there’s a gathering that has your number! The New York Whiskey Festival, the NYC Autumn Wine and Food Festival, and Halloween at the New York Botanical Garden are all fun seasonal events to attend. If you can time your visit to coincide with Open House New York – it’s an event that lowers fees to many of New York’s historical buildings and landmarks. Pay a $5 reservation fee and let the family fun begin!
