You’re all packed and ready for your vacation. While driving to the airport, you can already picture yourself there. But when you reach the gate, it’s clear something is wrong. The dreaded word “delayed” is written on the airport screen next to your flight number. Your flight has been delayed due to a severe storm.
As you look around, you see many frustrated and angry passengers. Happily, you don’t have to be one of them.
Automatic Flight Delay Compensation
If you have Allianz SmartBenefits travel insurance, flight delays are not as much of a concern because you can quickly get money back for delays.
Most airlines will not cover your expenses if a flight delay occurs. Some may give their passengers meal vouchers or hotel accommodations, but you can’t count on that because these policies vary by airline and situation.
Ask yourself: If you were stuck at the airport because of a flight delay, how handy it would be to have money immediately deposited into your bank account so you can cover your costs?
If you like this possibility, then you might want to consider a travel insurance plan that includes SmartBenefits.
What is Allianz SmartBenefits?
SmartBenefits from Allianz can improve your travel experience. These benefits are applied to your trip automatically when a covered situation occurs.
For example, by actively monitoring customers’ flights, Allianz can easily detect qualifying flight delays and automatically file a claim for you. Within minutes, you’ll get a text or an email from Allianz Global Assistance. It will say that you are eligible for a fixed-amount payment of $100 per person impacted by the delay.
This is a proactive payment for a flight delay. If you want to be eligible for proactive payments, you need to submit your flight information on allianztravelinsurance.com or through the TravelSmart app 48 hours before your departure. If you are using a travel agent, you can do the same through AgentMax.
Immediately after your claim is approved, you can have the money deposited on your debit card. The funds will show up on your balance as soon as your bank processes the transaction.
Direct deposit payments will be available after 2-5 business days, or you can receive a check in the mail within 5-10 business days. It’s as simple as that. You don’t have to jump through hoops to begin the process for reimbursement.
If your flight is canceled, you are not eligible for proactive payments. However, you can file a no-receipt claim in case a flight cancellation results in an eligible travel delay.
What is a No-Receipt Claim?
Allianz Global Assistance offers another option for covered travel delays. It is a no-receipt claim. It can apply for flight delays that are not monitored by Allianz Global Assistance.
You can still receive a fixed-amount inconvenience payment, but you must have proof of a covered delay.
Instead of submitting forms and receipts, you can, for example, send an email you received from your travel provider, notifying you about the delay. It takes about seven days to process no-receipts claims. The reimbursement amount is $100 per person per day.
What if You Spent More Than $100?
If you’re not traveling alone, and you need to spend a night at a hotel, expenses are probably going to be higher than $100 per person. You don’t have to worry.
File a claim online or through the TravelSmart app for whatever is above that amount, up to the maximum specified by your policy. Just make sure you have your receipts. Snap pictures of receipts and then upload them and request a higher daily reimbursement.
What About Baggage Delays?
Baggage delays can be irritating. But, with Allianz SmartBenefits, you can get reimbursed faster, with less paperwork and no receipts. File a claim with proof of a delay to receive a fixed-amount inconvenience payment. It’s typically $100 per person affected by the delay. It will be enough to cover a new toothbrush and a change of clothes.
But if you had to purchase items that cost more than $100, you can still file a claim. However, you will need receipts for the remaining expenses.
Don’t let a flight delay or a baggage delay impact the rest of your trip. This type of travel insurance will make your travel more comfortable and carefree, knowing that you’ll get paid after a travel disruption.
SmartBenefits is included with several Allianz Global Assistance’s travel insurance plans and available for any trips booked through travel agency partners.
