The TWA Hotel at JFK: A Return to Cool, Now Open for Business

Just in time for the busy, summer season, JFK finally has an on-site hotel, and it’s a true blast from the past! In 1962, the world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen was commissioned to design the TWA terminal at JFK. When the airline folded in 2001, the iconic building and plans for its future became a object of fascination, concern (for architectural preservationists) and speculation.

Now that the hotel is finally open for business, guests can choose between the property’s 512 guest rooms. The choice of view is between rooms that overlook an active runway and rooms that have a view back into the hotel. The runway view rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with extremely thick glass that guarantees you’ll sleep like a baby and not hear a thing.

The hotel is loaded with unique design elements like the hotel bar – a converted Lockheed Constellation Starliner airplane nicknamed the “Connie.” An infinity pool on the roof (not yet open) will offer spectacular views of an operational runway, with takeoffs and landings galore. The design team clearly had aviation lovers and design geeks in mind when they re-purposed this homage to the golden age of air travel.

From the minute guests step through the property doors, they are immersed in TWA from a bygone era – amenity kits, room keys, bathrobes, even Gola sneakers are available for purchase. There’s an online shop if you want the gear without the stay, and the prices are quite reasonable ($12 for a beach towel, $22 for a flight map t-shirt)!

Quick bite dining happens in the former Departures Hall, where guests used to check in for their flights. A variety of cuisines are represented – from Empanada Republic, Antico Noe (Panini) and the Halal Guys (the gyro legends of Manhattan) – just three of the restaurants in the hall.

On the other end of the dining spectrum is the Paris Café – a high end dining experience with mid-range pricing from the legendary Jean-Georges.

The location of the TWA Hotel makes it an especially attractive option for layover travelers who need a nap between flights. To this end, the hotel does offer day rates for rooms, with the following windows of time available:

7 am to 11 am
8 am to 8 pm
10 am to 4 pm
Noon to 6 pm

At the moment, the TWA Hotel does not offer discounts for employees, airline employees, travel agents, seniors, influencers or media, but they are pet-friendly with a deposit of just $25/night/per pet.

To book a room at the TWA Hotel you must book online direct with them at www.twahotel.com. Hotel room rates start at $249/night.

Other JFK area hotels include the Best Western JFJ (rooms for $197/night), the Radisson JFK (rooms starting at $235/night), and the Hilton New York JFK (rooms from $327/night). There are also many budget options available, all bookable on CheapAir.com.
