Winter in Amsterdam Guide

Winter in Amsterdam and the Netherlands is like stepping into a storybook. From illuminated canals to cosy markets and fun festivals, the season transforms the country into a place of lights, unique cultural events, and warm ‘gezelligheid’ — the Dutch concept of cosiness and comfort.

But it’s not just about staying warm, it’s about finding joy everywhere you look: be it sharing glühwein by a canal or feeling the atmosphere of a skating rink surrounded by historic buildings.

This guide dives into the best of what Amsterdam and the Netherlands offer during the winter season. From unmissable seasonal events to hidden gems, you’ll find everything you need to make the most of your holiday (or staycation) adventure.

1. Amsterdam Light Festival

Every winter, the city’s canals turn into an illuminated gallery during the Amsterdam Light Festival. International artists display thought-provoking light installations throughout the canals exploring a given theme.

Celebrating 750 years of Amsterdam, the theme for this special year is Rituals – chosen as a way to celebrate the unifying power of light and tradition over time. Best experienced on a canal cruise or walking tour, it is a unique chance to interact with innovative art in the heart of Amsterdam. Running from now until January 19, 2025.

2. Dutch Ice Sculpture Festival

From December 2024 until February 2025, this festival in Zwolle features intricate ice and snow sculptures crafted by talented international artists. Located about an hour from Amsterdam, it makes for a fun day trip for those who enjoy cold-weather artistry and creative displays.

This year, the theme Myths and Legends takes center stage, featuring ancient stories coming to life in ice and snow sculptures that reach up to 6 meters in height. Remarkable stories from Greek mythology, the Chinese zodiac and the Loch Ness monster are captured in the fascinating sculptures.

3. Amsterdam Winter Paradise

At the ‘Winterparadijs’, RAI Amsterdam turns into a winter-themed park with ice skating, snow slides, festive food stalls, and live musical performances. Running from December 19 and January 5, this family-friendly event captures the essence of the holiday season with plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. When you go, be sure to explore the new ‘Wonder World’, featuring an immersive experience – Symphony of Lights

4. Christmas Markets

Aside from the organised fun, you can also freely explore charming Christmas markets. Enjoy traditional Dutch oliebollen, ice skate, shop artisanal gifts, and get into the festive vibes at the yearly Christmas markets such as the one on Museumplein or the Funky Xmas Market in Amsterdam West.
