Travel insurance primarily provides coverage for prepaid non-refundable expenses in case you need to cancel your trip for covered reasons.
What does travel insurance include?
Trip Cancellation
In case you need to cancel your trip for covered reasons prior to your departure, it would reimburse you for your pre-paid, non-refundable portion of your trip cost. If you purchase the travel insurance sufficiently in advance and very close to your initial trip deposit, many travel insurance plans will let you add optional coverages, such as ‘cancel for any reason’.
Emergency Medical Expenses
If you were to be sick or injured while on a trip this benefit could pay for those expenses. Many domestic insurance plans do not extend coverage outside the U.S. or benefits may be limited and/or subject to higher deductibles, higher coinsurance and higher out of pocket maximums.
Trip Interruption
This is coverage in case you need to return back home from your trip early due to covered reasons; such as your house catches fire or is flooded, or a close relative passes away, it will help you pay for the additional expenses to make arrangements to return home early.
Emergency Medical Evacuation / Repatriation
If you were to be injured while on your trip and/ or in a remote location, this benefit would pay to transport you to the nearest medical facility where adequate medical care can be given. Once you are stable enough to travel, it may also pay for your return.
Return of Remains
If the unthinkable were to happen while on a trip, what would your family do? This benefit provides assistance with payment and arrangement of international transportation of the deceased back home.
Baggage
A person heavily relies on the contents of their luggage during travel. If it were to become lost or delayed, many travel providers have assistance limitations; this additional benefit could allow for these items to be replaced so you may continue with your travels.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment
This coverage would apply if you were to pass away or become dismembered in an accident. Some plans only cover this benefit if caused as a result of travelling in a common carrier, such as a plane or train.
Ancillary Benefits
There may be other benefits such as travel delay, passport replacement, emergency cash transfer, rental car coverage, flight accident, concierge services, ID theft assistance, the return of minor children, etc. These benefits vary among insurance policies.
Sometimes life happens and plans change.
