The Australian fashion designer shares her tips for the Italian island known for its dramatic landscape and glamorous appeal
When did you first visit Capri?
‘I first visited Capri in 2002, on my honeymoon. My husband and I went late in the summer and we loved everything about it. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Quisisana, and I think we must have booked the tiniest room in the hotel because we could barely fit the luggage in, but we had such a good time. Evening drinks at the hotel were a highlight before dinners around the island. I remember days spent swimming and lounging by the sea, long lunches, and evenings of window-shopping and walking the streets. I was struck by how lovely the Piazzetta was by day and night, with so much to see and do – there can be lots of people, but it has such a great energy. Capri is a breathtaking place and there’s beauty everywhere you look.’
What are your favourite things to do?
‘I think one of the great things about Capri is that you can do as much or as little as you want. Visit Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island, for the most stunning views. You can reach the top within 10 minutes by chair lift, taking in the never-ending horizon as you look out across Anacapri and to the Gulf of Naples. But Capri is also a place to just wander about and lose yourself on an evening stroll through town before dinner. The shopping is fantastic and there’s so much to see.’
Where are the best places to stay?
‘There are so many wonderful hotels and private villas. Punta Tragara is a favourite in Capri – it sits high on the cliff overlooking the Faraglioni. The views are incredible in every direction, and the hotel has lots of charm. Villa Bismarck is a fabulous private property to stay at with a large group of people or a few families. It has beautiful gardens and you can lounge by the pool or walk down the private path to the sea.’
