A Giant Wave Crashes Over Seoul in This Trippy Art Installation

‘The Wave’, and outdoor art installation by Seoul-based design company D’strict, might be the coolest thing we’ve come across recently.

Created by multiple ultra-high-definition screens sprawling across the facade of the SMTown Coez Artium—the largest billboard in South Korea at 80m x 20m— the installation displays hyper-realistic crashing waves that come to life when viewed at the right angle.

D’strict is well known for their site-specific experiences made using various digital techniques. They created an equally mind-bending installation in Seoul’s Nexen University last year. Both installations apply a series of anamorphic illusion methods to make it feel as if the wave could crash down on you at any moment. According to Hypebeast, the effect works by comprising specific vantage points to create a sense of depth without any distortion.

For some, the installation might be relaxing after months of lockdown. For others, a dizzying idea of what it’s like to be inside a washing machine mid-cycle.

D’strict’s next project, an art- and technology-inspired indoor theme park on Jeju Island featuring a holographic theater and other anamorphic spaces, is expected to launch in the coming months, according to CNN.
