Rome has welcomed a slew of luxury hotels in recent months with both Six Senses and Bulgari setting up shop in the Eternal City. Now, Marriott has thrown its hat into the ring, opening its very first Edition outpost in Italy, located on a quiet block a short stroll from Bernini’s Triton fountain.
Built in the 1940s by Cesare Pascoletti and revered architect Marcello Piacentini, the historic building was formerly occupied by one of Italy’s main banks. From the moment you step foot inside the striking lobby with its soaring 22 ft ceilings and flowing emerald drapes, it’s clear you’re in for a real treat.
Every effort has been taken to meticulously preserve the property’s original features from the central courtyards to the statues and lamps peppered throughout. Perhaps most impressive of all is the beautiful central staircase crafted from rare cipollini marble from the quarries of Apuane.
The rooms themselves – of which there are just 91 – are pared back and refined: think warm walnut paneling, custom-made beige leather furnishings and charming herringbone wooden flooring. Expansive windows fill the rooms with natural light; décor is kept to a minimum save for a select few artworks adorning the walls. Bathrooms are just as enticing with their Carrera marble basins and brushed brass fixtures.
Elsewhere at Rome Edition, you’ll find three bars: the speakeasy-inspired Punch Room serving an array of punches, the glamorous Jade Bar – an intimate space decked out in floor-to-ceiling green antique marble where you can enjoy an expansive list of cocktails – and a rooftop bar up on the seventh floor.
Alongside the bar, the rooftop is home to a travertine plunge pool dotted with teak sunbeds – the perfect spot for relaxing with a glass of bubbly.
As for dining, Mariott brought in chef Paola Colucci (founder of Pianostrada) to helm the kitchen at Anima. Guests can dine in the restaurant – an opulent space adorned with royal blue furnishings – or opt to eat outside in the jungle-like private garden. Colucci’s menu is filled with traditional Italian recipes passed down through the generations such as spaghetti with roasted tomatoes, and veal with tuna sauce.
When you can bring yourself to step foot outside of Rome Edition, there is plenty to explore nearby: the Piazza Barberini, Spanish Steps and Borghese gardens are all within walking distance.
