The Edinburgh Grand’s legacy

What’s it like?

Edinburgh is jostling with stately buildings, but even so, the facade of Marriott’s newly acquired luxury hotel stands out – once the National Bank of Scotland.

Perched gracefully on St Andrew’s Square in Edinburgh’s UNESCO-listed New Town, the entrance is just minutes from Princes Street and the Royal Mile. Reception staff and a burly, kilted doorman gave a warm welcome and an excellent recommendation to take a scenic walk along the Water of Leith up to Stockbridge.

Rooms

Before joining Marriott, the Edinburgh Grand belonged to the Cheval Collection of luxury serviced apartments – and that legacy remains. Our entry-level 33 sqm Studio had a dedicated lounge area (featuring a comfy mustard sofa and coffee table) and extensive kitchen facilities – everything from a dishwasher, washing machine and oven to a cheese grater.

A comfortable king-size bed is framed by a dramatic forest-green velvet headboard, while scatter cushions evoke the Scottish countryside.

The open-plan bathroom was impressively large, with a walk-in shower and lovely amenities from Napiers Edinburgh – I’ll be buying the Herbstrong Shampoo Tonic with organic rosemary back at home. A heated towel rail with a 15-minute booster switch and Dyson hairdryer were appreciated – though there were no plug sockets near a mirror.

All of this was packed into a modest space without feeling cramped. By the laws of physics, however, some concessions had to be made. These came in the form of storage space. There was open hanging space, a few shelves, and no drawers. It’s worth noting that the lovely wood-panelled Family and Junior Suites aren’t drastically more expensive.

Facilities

The Hawksmoor steakhouse is the hotel’s premium dining venue, while the revamped Lady Libertine leans towards casual bar food. Staff whizzed around with big smiles, tending the small restaurant and a buzzier cocktail bar below. We loved the padron peppers and chorizo, while the pork belly with slaw and walnuts was an elevated combo.

The fourth floor is home to the Register Club – a wood-panelled space with windows overlooking the rooftops. It felt like relaxing in a friend’s living room – one guest even turned up in his bathrobe. An à la carte breakfast is served here, and celebrates Scottish cuisine with haggis, tattie scones and black pudding. The property also has a 24-hour fitness centre, and a spa is in the works.

This is a handsome heritage address with more home comforts than your typical hotel room. A great base to explore Edinburgh.
