Zermatt Unplugged
Surrounded by 38 four-thousand-meter peaks and at the foot of the world-famous, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn, lies the small, idyllic community of Zermatt. The car-free mountain resort is located in the canton of Valais in Switzerland at about 1,600 meters above sea level. The Matterhorn village gives insight into the traditional life of the mountain people and at the same time shows the modernity of the resort town. The imposing mountain scenery bestows something magical to the village and is a popular holiday destination for both winter sports and summer hiking.
The Valais mountain village, the mountain landscape, the diverse cuisine and the unique atmosphere in Zermatt inspired the festival’s founders, Thomas Sterchi and Marco Godat, to create a festival in this magical place: Zermatt Unplugged.

A very intimate space, reduced to the musical essence, promising new talents and well-known DJs in front of an incomparable setting – the acoustic music festival Zermatt Unplugged has become essential for the European music scene. The first edition took place in 2007, founded from Thomas Sterchi and Marco Godat as a Singer-Songwriter Festival. By now, over 100 concerts during 5 days are taking place on 17 different stages, spread in the whole village as well as on the mountain.
The line up fascinates with a versatile, top-class and multinational program – besides international top artists such as Jessie J, Passenger, James Morrison, Nelly Furtado, Simple Minds, Alanis Morissette, Billy Idol and Lionel Richie, numerous newcomers guarantee extraordinary acoustic shows. The combination of acoustic music, impressive mountain scenery, beautiful spring snow, the gracious hospitality of Zermatt and the incomparable atmosphere of the Matterhorn make the festival a unique experience in Europe.
Where to stay
Arrival by train
The most practical and environmentally friendly way to travel to Zermatt is by public transport. Only electric cars without a combustion engine are allowed to operate in the village. The best train connections can be found under www.sbb.ch/en.
Special trains
Travel conveniently back home with the extra trains of the MGBahn after the concerts. On Tuesday to Thursday, an extra train leaves Zermatt for Visp and Brig at 11.15 p.m. And at 12.45 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Arrival by car
Zermatt is car-free. Private traffic is only permitted up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). Conveniently and cost-effectively book your ticket for the drive between Kandersteg and Goppenstein with the BLS car shuttle train from home.
